Protesting Don Imus

Hey everybody,

Not sure if you are aware, but Don Imus is due to return to the airwaves on December 3 on WABC in New York. I’ve been on the phone with my network contacts to let them know that many people are NOT happy with Imus’ return. We also felt it imperative to inform our audience that The YourBlackWorld Coalition plans to join the National Association of Black Journalists in their fight to keep Don Imus off the air. Our petition and open letter are here if you would like to sign: http://www.yourblackworld.com/imus.html
Here is what I know. I will be honest about what I’ve seen behind the scenes:

    1) The fight is going to be long and difficult. Imus was a money-maker, and he will be signing with one of the networks that makes its money by appealing to the racism embedded in neo-conservatives such as Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly. They EMBRACE the fact that Imus is considered a racist and a sexist.

    2) When I worked with Rev. Jackson and Rev. Sharpton to get Imus off the air the first time, I told them that boycotting the corporate sponsors would be the best line of attack. That is ultimately what shot him down, since anyone will abandon you if you lose corporate sponsorship (I am a finance professor after all, so I’m always analyzing the money trail). The truth is that many of the corporations that sponsor WABC (GEICO, Chase.com, AT&T Wireless, McDonalds and Verizon) also make money directly from Y-O-U. I personally plan to reconsider my business relationships with these corporations. A list of the corporate sponsors for WABC can be found here: http://www.yourblackworld.com/news/stories/110607/wabc.htm.

    3) The mainstream media doesn’t give a damn: they are too myopic in focus, and if they cover this issue, it will only be for a couple of days. The networks like to wait out the storm and then go back to business as usual. Also, if you’ll notice, most mainstream media is not very well diversified to begin with (the top news networks don’t have any African-American hosts for their news shows and don’t care to find any). Like the Jena 6, this is going to have to be a grassroots movement and one in which we focus on being a consistent thorn in the side of those who support this sort of racism and sexism.

    4) Any political figure who appears on Imus’ show should be forced to explain their decision. This is especially true of the Republican presidential candidates who chose to snub the debate held on an HBCU campus by Tavis Smiley. I stand with my brother Tavis in his disdain for the individuals who so readily embrace ethnic exclusion, yet have the audacity to think they have the right to lead our country.

The petition is here if you would like to sign: http://www.yourblackworld.com/imus.html. I welcome articles from anyone who has something to say about the issue, we will publish them on YourBlackWorld. Also, anyone who runs an organization that would like to join us in this fight, we would love to hear from you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Boyce Watkins

A Message from Dr. Boyce Watkins - Jena 6 Trial

Dear friends,

The case in Jena, Louisiana was brought to my attention by Mark Thompson of XM Satellite Radio. I was doing an interview with Mark in which the father of one of the children involved was also a guest on the show. I was shocked to hear his story, as well as accounts of the situation from independent media sources.

In December 2006, 6 black students were arrested for the beating of a white student in a racially motivated incident. The black students were charged with attempted murder, facing over 100 years in prison, while prior incidents of aggression by the white students, including hanging nooses and pulling out a gun, went relatively ignored by officials. The most riveting and telling aspect of this case is the statement allegedly made by the District Attorney, Reed Walters, who told the youths, “I could end your lives with the stroke of a pen.” If the Duke District Attorney Mike Nifong can be disbarred for his alleged misconduct in the Duke Lacrosse case, then Mr. Walters should receive similar treatment. His dreadful statement is not only problematic, it also represents a consistent theme of historic injustice in the south, in which the lives of hundreds of thousands of African-Americans have been destroyed by prosecutors who feel comfortable abusing their power. We are asking all Americans to mobilize in support of the youth involved in this situation. I am also calling for Reed Walters to be investigated by the Attorney General of the State of Louisiana. Finally, the entire justice system in the state of Louisiana should be investigated by The U.S. Attorney General’s Office in order to determine why black men are being persecuted and imprisoned at such alarming rates. While many of these convictions may be just, there is reason to suspect that the punishment does not always fit the crime.

The lives of black youth are infinitely valuable. We will no longer tolerate instances in which the lives of our young people are stolen and destroyed. Please Sign our Petition Calling for the District Attorney in the Jena Six Case, Reed Walters to be disbarred. If Mike Nifong can be disbarred for his treatment of the Duke Lacrosse Players, we at YourBlackWorld argue that the District Attorney in Jena, Louisiana should be considered for disbarment as well.

The petition is at this link. We ask for your support:

Dr. Boyce Watkins to host XM Satellite Show, appear on Inside Edition

What's going on this week?

- Dr. Boyce Watkins is going to be the guest host for The Ambrose Lane Show on XM Satellite Power 169 Wednesday morning from 10 am – 1 pm.

Tomorrow, Dr. Watkins will speak with The Rev. Jesse Jackson, Etan Thomas from The Washington Wizards, and Marc Lamont Hill (Regular CNN/FOX correspondent and Temple University Professor).

On the show, Dr. Watkins and guests will talk about the lack of African-Americans in the media, the alleged sexism in hip hop, the struggles of single black mothers, why R. Kelly is STILL not on trial yet (5 years after the famous sex tape), and a lot of other interesting topics. Anyone who knows Dr. Boyce knows that the show is going to be insane, so this is something you DEFINITELY don’t want to miss.

- The radio show, Boiling Hot with Boyce Watkins comes on Power 106.9 Sunday mornings at 10 am. Check it out. We also put the show on www.yourblackworld.com.

- Dr. Boyce recently filmed a segment with the show Inside Edition about the millions of Americans who appear to be middle class, but yet they are living paycheck to paycheck. It ties into his new book Financial Lovemaking 101: Merging assets with your partner in ways that feel good.

Please check out www.yourblackworld.com for more information. If you want to see some of Dr. Boyce's recent television appearances, please visit www.youtube.com/blueboymedia.

Dr. Boyce on CNN, Fox, Essence Magazine to discuss money and college students

Sunday on Fox News at 12 (I think that's the time) and the next night on CNN (Paula Zahn, Monday at 8 pm), we are going to talk about whether or not college athletes should be paid. I think that it's an interesting issue, since many of the athletes are black males, and also billions of dollars are extracted from the black community through college sports. For example, CBS signed a $6 billion dollar deal just to air the March Madness Tournament. This tournament earns more revenue than the Super Bowl and the World Series COMBINED. That doesn't include the hundreds of millions earned during the rest of the year. Additionally, coaches earn salaries exceeding 3 - 4 million dollars, multimillion dollar shoe deals are signed by universities, and players are put under tremendous pressure to try to study while keeping up with a rigorous sports schedule. All the while, if they receive a free meal from the wrong person at the wrong time (even a candy bar), they lose their eligibility. I have seen it for years while teaching at Ohio State, Kentucky, Indiana and Syracuse, all big time athletics schools.

In case you want to know, this is an issue I am passionate about, primarily because many of these men come from poverty. It never made much sense to me that the coach flies to the game on a private jet, while the star player's mother arrives on a Greyhound Bus. One star player's mother recently had to beg her church for money so that she could see her son play in the Final Four. At the same time, the university received a check for nearly $20 million dollars from her son's performance. As a Finance Professor and an American, that just doesn't seem fair to me. But that's just my opinion. Some people disagree with me, which is why I will surely be arguing with someone Sunday and Monday.
Bye!
Boyce

Hey, where'd all the ads go??

You're probably as glad as I am to see those ads go. Although YBE does cost money to run, seeing those numerous Google text ads on the side just cluttered things up a bit, and probably distracted many readers from the content of this site. So it was definitely time to clean that up. We won't see any more ads, unless they are part of a banner exchange with other sites or are paid advertisements from businesses that we have personally been in contact with. And thank you all for your continued support!
